Kithuki residents get affordable and clean energy

About 100 households in Kithuki Sub Location, Makueni County are set to benefit from clean and affordable renewable energy following the launch of Kithuki Solar Power Mini Grid project. The project implemented by Sun Power Limited, with funding support from Act!’s Changieni Rasili Mali Facility, will provide direct connection to Kithuki Secondary school, dispensary, chief’s camp, including nearby shops once full connection is done.

Speaking during the launch of the solar project, Makueni Member of Parliament, Hon Daniel Maanzo urged the locals to take advantage of the affordable source of energy to improve their lives.” Solar energy is good. It is safe and affordable as evident in most developed countries, said Maanzo as he called on the residents especially the youth to initiate income-generating activities that could immensely benefit from the available source of power. His sentiments were echoed by Joseph Musyoka, a member of the project committee who noted that the project was timely, as it would enable majority of the residents light up their houses.

“As a new area of programming for Act!, the aim of the pilot project is to help communities living in areas with abundant sunlight benefit from sustainable energy and this is exactly what we are giving to the people of Kithuki today,” said Julius Wairoma,Program Manager, Environment and Natural Resources. He called on the committee to take up the ownership of the project and manage it wisely.
